On June 15 and 16, DARE and the Institute of Psychoanalysis came together to present the first Northern Summer School at the Howard Assembly Rooms, Leeds.

This exciting collaboration, which aimed to make psychoanalytic ideas accessible to a wider public, brought them to life by exploring the shared territories between psychoanalysis, opera and other performing arts, with their shared aim of telling a story with emotional intensity and meaning.

The Summer School was all interested parties from any discipline or background and over two days, performances, lectures, film and discussion groups gave participants a unique opportunity to meet practising psychoanalysts and to take part in a dialogue between artists, directors and psychoanalysts to explore the synergy between the two disciplines.

Contributors included soprano Giselle Allen; tenor Dan Norman; Opera North Head of Music David Cowan; Assistant Head of Music Annette Saunders; director Orpha Phelan; psychoanalysts David Bell, Don Campbell, Susie Godsil, Anthea Gomez, Veronica Gore, Anuradha Menon, Ken Robinson and Andrea Sabbadini.
