Application and appointment

All candidates must complete the Fellowship application form.

Selection process

Applications will be considered and a shortlist agreed by a panel comprising senior specialists from each partner organisation. Shortlist candidates may be interviewed by panel members by telephone, video link and potentially in person. The panel decision is final.

The programme is delivered through DARE, a unique collaborative partnership between Opera North and the University of Leeds in the UK.  For the New Zealand Pettman Dare Fellowship, DARE is joined in the delivery by New Zealand Opera and the University of Auckland in New Zealand.Fellowship starts in Leeds: mid-September 2018


The Fellowship is fully funded through the generous support of Professor Barrie and Mrs Maureen Pettman through the Opera North Future Fund. In 2018/19 this includes: –

  • Return travel from New Zealand (for the New Zealand Fellow)
  • Tuition fees
  • A monthly bursary of £1,300 to cover accommodation and living expenses for the period.
