New in 2014:  The Opera North Book

Dr Kara McKechnie, Lecturer in Dramaturgy and Literary Management in the School of PCI, has worked at the heart of DARE since the collaboration began.

Kara McKechnie photoShe has initiated and participated in a broad range of projects, from research and collaborative PhDs to practice-based learning and student association with the opera production process.

Whilst researching her book, the idea for which grew out of the increasingly close relationship between our organisations, Kara became immersed in the operations, archives and artistry of Opera North.

Opera North: Historical and Dramaturgical Perspectives on Opera Studies, which has three parts forming three different ways of approaching opera studies, was published in 2013, Opera North’s 35th year.  It is available to buy online from Emerald Publishing.

Launched in December 2012, this unique publication celebrates the production of two new operas, written by DARE PhD student Adam Strickson.  Flight Paths (2011) and Amy’s Last Dive (2012), were created as part of the Cultural Olympiad’s successful imove project and performed in Leeds and Bridlington.   Amy’s Last Dive was composed by Cheryl Frances-Hoad, DARE Fellow in opera related arts.

The book, which can be ordered through Valley Press or inpress for £10 inc. p&p, includes libretti and films of both operas, poetry by Adam Strickson, blogs by Adam and Cheryl and documentary photography.
