DARE New Composers Forum 2013

The second DARE New Composers Forum aimed to bridge the yawning gap in the opportunities available for composers to evaluate their symphonic work in a professional context.  It offered emerging composers a rare chance to create work for full orchestra and to develop that work with Opera North’s conductor Justin Doyle and the Orchestra of Opera North.

On 29th November 2013 the orchestra, conducted by Justin Doyle, gave a public performance of the chosen works  in the Howard Assembly Room to an audience including composers, conductors, critics and representatives of publishing houses.

The 2013 finalists for the DARE New Composers Forum were:

Edward Caine; David Lancaster; Oliver Leith; Jacob Thompson-Bell; Barnaby Martin

The DARE New Composers Forum was generously supported by Opera North and Cultural and Creative Industries Exchange, University of Leeds, the RVW Trust and The Holst Foundation.

“I remember very well when, in 1999, I had my orchestral piece conducted by Elgar Howarth at York as part of Opera North’s New Composers Forum. Working with such renowned figures and musicians set me in good stead for a successful career and I would urge aspiring composers to take advantage of this rare opportunity.”
